While there is no cure for macular degeneration, there are ways to help ease the symptoms. We’ll show you how both high power and low power reading glasses can give you the independence you want.

What is Macular Degeneration?

Impacting more than 10 million people in the United States alone, scientists expect macular degeneration to reach epidemic proportions as baby boomers continue to age. The eye is made up of several different parts that work together to create your field of vision.

In the center area is the macula. It’s what lets you focus for your center vision. This is what you use when you read, recognize faces, drive a car and examine fine details. It’s one of the most sensitive parts of the eye.

If the cells deteriorate, then the brain isn’t getting all the information to create a full highly detailed picture. At first, you won’t notice any vision loss, but as the deterioration continues you’ll notice blurriness or waviness in the center of your field of vision.

Your peripheral vision isn’t usually impacted, but over time the center vision gets worse and worse.

There are two types of macular generation: dry and wet. About 90 percent have dry macular degeneration where the layers of the macular become thinner over time. Wet macular degeneration usually begins as dry and progresses to wet.

Blood vessels begin to grow in the area behind the retina, but they’re week and leak fluid, lipids and blood. These fluids get between the eye layers including the macula and lead to scarring.

High powered reading glasses can help you by providing clarity for a small vision space. If you want to read a book or paper, but your macular degeneration has advanced too far, then these reading glasses can help.

Let There Be Light

If you’re using high powered readers, then you can help yourself get the best use of them by following a few simple steps.

The best thing you can do is have plenty of light available. Don’t try and use the readers in a dimly lit room. If you can have a room fully lit with natural light or lamp light, using the readers is much easier. The best option is natural light, so reading near a window or out on your patio or porch can give you many hours of enjoyment.

If you’re using lamplight, don’t use harsh bulbs, but ones that create a soft light that illuminates, but doesn’t hurt your eyes.

Adapt to Macular Degeneration

It doesn’t matter if you’re recently diagnosed or in the advanced stages, consider using low and high power reading glasses to help with your vision problems. It’s important to choose the magnification that’s best for you.

High magnification gives you a highly detailed look and is ideal for anyone with macular degeneration. Don’t let the disease ruin your love of reading or other hobbies. The disease doesn’t have to define you and high powered reading glasses help give you the independence you need.
